What is the best way to store extra Gasoline in a vechicle?

My family and I are taking a short family trip to Guadalajara, Mexico- and we were told we have to bring extra gas, because filling stations aren't always close enough to make it between on a single tank. What is the safest way to store about 10 gallons of gasoline inside the car?

Storage of gasoline INSIDE vehicle is not recommended. Usually it is in a container OUTSIDE vehicle for ventilation. In the trunk the fumes could build and poss ignite. In passenger compartment fumes could overpower driver and cause an accident. See if there is a way to secure it outside the vehicle; if not then a well sealed leakproof container in the trunk if you have to. But be advised--gas fumes do escape and are far more explosive than gas itself!

Never store Gasoline in the car. It is poison and can kill passengers. It is explosive and can ignite with a spark from the static electricity in the car. The best place to keep gas is in the gas station waiting for you.

Figure this: If your car gets 30 mpg and you have 13 gallons, you would have to travel 390 miles before you ran out of gas. Stop every 50 miles and you can travel almost anywhere in Mexico. (Other people have cars so plan on where the gas stations are and the times they are opened) I have traveled many times out west and in the desert and have never run out of gas, even when most of them were closed.
