my 97 1.3 efi ohv endura engine needs the head gasket replaced i was quoted £150 for the work. how much should i offer a private mechanic to do the work. i have paid £26 for the part

You can assume that the garage probably quoted about £40 just for the part and then a few hours labour and VAT. Labour is normally around £30 an hour in a garage, so offer a private mechanic about £50.... or, better still, ask him how much he wants paying for it and then haggle!
