Question:
How come there are avenus, drives, roads, circles, parkways, and the like? Why can't they all be streets? I know that Paths and another type of street were old Indian trails, but I don't understand the rest. All answers are appreaciated. Thanks!

The different names actually mean things. For example:Why are we still using cars instead of hovercrafts?
'Close' means that it is residential and not a through-road.
'Court' and 'square' are normally short roads leading to an enclosed residential area (a square or court, also refering to the area itself).
'Avenues' are lined with trees.
'Drives' either end at a landmark or large building of some kind, or are a traditionally well used route.
'Roads' and 'ways' actually go somewhere (another town, for example).
'Streets' are generally roads within towns and cities.

Parkway is very much mis named as it usualy is a multi lane road to move a lot of traffic in a short time. It probably got that name because of the traffic jams and for a lot of the time the cars were just parked there waiting to move again.

Driving test on Monday. Need advice.?
I think it is because towns and cities are always growing. You can actually have the same name for more than one area of town by having avenue, drive circle etc.. after it. Where I live we have four different streets named "Second". We have "2nd street", "Second Avenue", "2nd Drive", and "Second Lane". Just be glad you are not a mailman.I got a short shifter and it's hard to switch gear?
All depends upon how a city is planned. We'll take one of my favorite grid system cities, Miami.Does it matter what rim size for a car to be booted?
Avenues run north and south only, streets run east and west only. It's easy enough. Granted, there's a numerous system that actually DOES make sense there... If your on 136 PL (Place), then the next one will be 137 AVE. (PL) runs north and south as well, before AVE kicks in. CT (Court) usually applies to either or, and doesn't run very long, usually a cul-de-sac or dead end.
Why do some blokes who know nothing about cars kick the tyres?
DR is usually applied to anything that meanders, as so does BLVD.
Now as for Freeway, Parkway, and Highway, it's all a regional thing really, depends what the area is used to.
Now I'm living in a city (Orlando), where the same street, will change 3-4 different names within a span of miles. Plus, when your in cities that have seperate "town communities" that have been enveloped by a larger city, then you will bump into a situation where each have their own name, for the same street.

Imagine this, if you were to replan a whole cities naming and numbering system, to reflect something that actually MADE sense...well, it just wouldn't happen. Imagine all the deeds and paperwork to refelct that your house is no longer 1202 Main Street, but now 405 Forest Ave. What a mess...
