Out of curiousity... what it Driver's Ed like anywhere outside the US?

Question:
A fierce wondering... because here, you basically just take a class, pass a test and you're on the road. How do you learn how to drive? Do you get permits, too? Do you have to learn about the physics of driving and all about the cars, too? I feel like I'm asking about something as foreign as aliens or something, but seriously, it's been bothering me! I heard a rumor and it's been mulling around in my head ever since... thanks!
