damn, i keep seeing these answers by 'dodge-man', they make me sick... owns a shop... in my line of work the people who run independent shops call me for help, they ask some of the dumbest questions of all... yet this guy throws that title around, like it means something, the worst part of it is, i have seen a correct answer ignored because it didnt involve the words "i own a shop" and his retarded answer did.
so my question is, do you have to deal with the "independent professionals"? if so, do they make you look dumb?(with the infinite knowledge a backyard wrench attains in life) or do you joke about the unfortunate bastard that took the car to an independent to save money?

I've read the 'answers' that you refer to and share your frustration with the great deal of misinformation that is broadcast. There is an expression that I heard years ago that is appropriate...he has had one year of experience thirty six times. I'm sure the contributor means well but I agree that the largest part of good customer service is educating the customer. I try never to throw anyone under the bus; when I run across a situation where a customer has been misinformed I stop to take the time to educate the customer on why the situation is different than they understand it to be before I jump into selling him or her on why they should take a different course of action. I have more experience, certifications and degrees than anyone would aspire to but I would never cite those as a reason to 'chose me'. In the end, if the customer doesn't buy what I'm saying then i did a bad job in explaining what was necessary, why it was necessary and why they should do business with me instead of chosing other alternatives. And yes, many of wrong answers are chosen; that's life. You'll see those customers eventually come to you for the right answer if you respect their right to chose and their right pay the tuition for their eduction.

I don't deal with independent garages, and I don't have anything against them in particular. david i deal with u mechanics like dodge and you all the time trying to tell people how to fix or paint something, and you turn a 2-500 dollar fix into 1000 - 4000 dollar fix. independent shops arent always bad but just because someone works for a dealer or has a "certificate) from a ford gm toyota sikkens diamont dupont i-car ase paint ase mechanics. doesnt mean there any better. but i will say this i turn down alot of work from people that did what their mechanic said will be a fast or good fix. you maybe a good mechanic but you dont dont crap about paint and your just like this "independent" shop owner when it comes to automotive paint.so to you "mechanics" that think you know about paint heres a quarter and go to paint school.
