It is the displacement of the engine. Simply stated, it is the volume taken up by the piston from the low point of it's travel (BDC or bottom dead center) to the high point of it's travel (TDC - top dead center). This volume is then multiplied by the number of cylinders to calculate the displacement. What to do while in the car alone?
It can be stated in liters, cc's (cubic centimeters), or cubic inches.

6 litres is the total displacement of the 12 cylenders the same as saying it's a 350 means it's got 350 cubic inches of displacement. each cylender displaces 500 mljust like a chevy 5.7 litre is a 350 cubic inch engine, actually the litres are just a european measure of cubic inch.
Why are the gas prices so hi and why wont the government step in?
liters are the metric unit of measurement for displacement, kind of like if you hear of a 350c1 chevrolet or a 427ci ford..you can find out the cubic inches of displacement on any car by multipying the liters by 61.. so a 6.0 liter engine would be a 366cubic inch motor

Liter is a measure of size. When you put the piston in waater it is how much volume it will displace. So a 5.0L v8 would have smaller cylenders than a 5.0L v6 becuase the volume is spread out between more cylenders on teh v8.It's the volume of the cylinders. Metrics are supposed to be more easily understood.
