the biggest ford suv sold in oz is the explorer (which may be dropped) and the biggest gm suv is the holden captiva. i know private firms sometimes import big usa utes and suvs but why dont gm and ford/dodge themselves market things like the silverado, suburban, tahoe, f-150 and ram in australia?

Because companies do market research and people probably don't want them there. Same reason the car companies don't sell most of the smallets models in North America. You wont find a Nissan Micra, or a Toyota Aygo over here.Will a car roof roof hold 140-160 pounds?
