Muscle cars are the ones that had monster HP ratings ..GTO, challenger,road runner,camaro chevelle. etc.. car that had more motor than brakes.pony cars were on a smaller bodied vehicle with a smaller price tag and engine..mustang..dart, valiant ect..muscle cars died with the gas crisis of the early 70s but started in the early 60s..But even though you you could buy a hemi road runner for about 5-6k bucks was alot of money at that time and then the insurance CO. found out about them high HP low weight.just killed Muscle cars

Not much that fits that formula today: the Mustang is the only thing carrying the pony car label now. The now-discontinued GTO would have qualified as a muscle car. If you stretch the definition of a muscle car to include four doors, the new Dodge Charger and Cadillac CTS-V would be good examples.
