Question:
I'm seriously thinking of doing the LGV test in the next couple of months. I've driven vans in the past and at 35 and without too many specialist qualifications I'm hoping I would enjoy driving for a living at least for the next few years. Discuss..

Help me drive a manual transmission, i am having trouble... am i killing my car?
Well, as you may have gathered, us lorry drivers are a right bunch of wingers! :-) Before i took my test 2 years ago, I (like you) asked several delivery drivers at my workplace, what they thought of their job. I can honestly say 8 out of 10 of them seemed like they wanted to put me off the idea with no real reason why.I took the test anyway and passed within an instructors standard (when someone wants to become an instructor, apparently they need to re-take the test and have no more than 4 or 5 minor mistakes.can't quite remember exact number).
How come pavement in england looks so good?
Anyway, i did a couple of agency jobs which were ok, and then applied for an LGV2 driver job through the Job Centre. Within 1 month i was on over 20k a year when i had never been on more than £6ph before!!
I would also like to add that 2 years into my career, I would not want to be doing any other job right now. I was never previously able to stick at a job for more than a year or so, but aslong as you don't mind your own company, I can't see why you wouldn't be able to get a long term career out of driving.
Yes, there are downsides, as there are to everything. Mine is road rage. I consider myself a good driver and when i see some of the stunts other drivers pull on the road, i like to let them know about it. It's got me into a bit of trouble lately (complaints etc), but i've got an understanding employer so have been quite lucky.
My tires may be being slashed at work?
Hopefully you will get a few more different opinions to make a more informed decision. It worked out well for me, but it may not have for others. Don't let people put you off doing it as downsides are usually down to the employer, not the career in general. Get your experience any way you can and get in there with a good employer.

I'm answering this, even though I am not an HGV Driver, but I am taking dictation from my Husband! What gas brand is the best for cars?
He got his LGV+C 8 years ago, and thus far he has found it to be an interesting and enjoyable job. There are drawbacks, as with any job, ie: lots of sitting in traffic, idiots on the road including other HGV Drivers etc. Long-Distance work can be very hard if you have a family, (I can vouch for this!) A piece of advice, when you get your license, try working for an agency. The money is OK, (no holiday or sick pay at most agencies unfortunately), but you will get lots of experience driving different types of vehicles.
Which is the best car in terms of fuel efficiency?
Overall, he enjoys his job but would say use your license properly, don't be one of those nasty HGV Drivers that gives everyone else a bad name, don't let people wind you up on the road and remember that you are a professional driver in charge of 20 odd tonnes of metal that can and will cause huge amounts of damage if you are not always on top of your game.
