It was extraordinarily expensive to maintain those things, and they were so expensive to fly that very few people could afford it. But the last nail in the coffin was when one of them blew a tire and the tread sucked into the engine and it crashed in flames on the runway, killing all on board.
If you are talking about the Concorde plane, it went out of service a bit later on (2003?, I believe).
Anyway, as far as Air France and British Airways are concerned, it was not making enough money to run efficiently. Although a secure plane in general, there are new 'noise-limitation' laws in Europe, and the Concorde, because of its size and power, was going to find it difficult to adapt.
