Question:
According to a website with it being 4-cylinder with only 118 hp, it should be getting 23 for the city and 30 for the highway and most of my miles ARE highway miles.
Can you give me some information about hybrid cars?
Anyone out there who's mechically inclinded who would know why it's doing this?
Answers:
Because vehicles are rated at their very best fuel mileage in ideal conditions with acceleration slow and steady, no acessories turned on and all windows rolled up. Actually achieving the rated fuel mileage on any given vehicle is quite a task.
Why is the US Auto Industry so weak.?
Main reason your truck gets poorer than rated fuel mileage is that you likely don't drive it in ideal conditions. Most people accelerate quickly, which causes it to suck down more gas than what it did when they rated it. You probably also have the heater or A/C and radio turned on, which cuts the power down even more and uses more fuel to run the acessories.
Does anyone know what the blue light is on the back of some stoplights?
Also, you're pushing a truck with a tiny little underpowered 4 cylinder engine (for comparison, my Honda has almost that much horsepower!). I know a few people with S-10's, some have a 4 cyl engine, others have the V-6. They all seem to get about the same fuel mileage due to the power to weight ratio. The 4 cyl is working harder than the 6 cyl to push that truck around since it has less power to start with. Under ideal conditions, the V-6 probably gets worse mileage, but since in real world driving it doesn't have to work as hard as the 4, it gets about the same.
Add in the fact that you probably have some higher mileage on it, which will decrease the economy a bit, and you may have some worn out or older spark plugs, wires, and other ignition parts, and teh mileage gets even poorer.
What is the most effective way to arrange your own engine failure?
Some other things that will cause your fuel mileage to be slightly worse are: Dirty air filter, incorrect tire pressures, alignment not set, dirty fuel filter, and unnecessary extra weight in the bed.
