What is an alternative to a mini (UK only)?

Question:
Classic, not BMW mini. I already drive a mini but am lokking for something similar in size and simplicity to learn about the core basics of mechanics without risking messing up my daily driver.

What is the name of that car brand?

A friend recommended a 126, a metro or a MK1 fiesta...any others? Thanks!

Which Estate has the biggest boot? (Passat, Focus, Golf, Vectra)?

The old BMC/British Leyland cars are possibly the best of all vehicles, for the simple reason that spares are still plentiful, they tend to be reaosnably reliable and they are not over-complex.

What is your favortie super america or sports car?

Actually, Minis and Metros are quite difficult to work on due to the transverse engine/gearbox layout and cramped engine bays with side-mounted radiators. The suspensions also require any number of special tools and/or speciliast services; depending on whether it is purely rubber suspension to the Moulton design, or the later hydragas suspension, which requires specialised services.

What Years did International Make The Scout, Scout 2?

The same comments apply exactly to cars like the Austin 1100/1300 and the MG1300, which although wonderful handling cars, have many of the same complexities as the Mini. However, on the plus side, they were generally very reliable, and if bought in good condition, should continue to delight: not least for the magic-carpet ride comfort.

Is it fun to run in to a car and have you ever do it?

Best of the lot, but now VERY difficult to find in good condition, are the "land-crab" Austin 1800's, with the "B" series engine used in the MG-B. Get hold of the rare Vanden-Plas 1800 with the leather upholstery, and you have a really class act, superlative handling and a good strong vehicle.

Should you come across the replacement for this, the Austin Princess 2.2, then pour petrol on it and light a match! They deserve to be put out of their misery.

Do I need a special outlet to plug an electric car?

I would personally look at the other, sometimes older cars from the same Austin/Morris/MG/ stable, or from the old Triumph company which became part of British Leyland.

How is car production financed?

Easy enough to work on are the traditional front engine/rear-drive cars such as the Morris Minor (a very good handling car actually), and its close, but more stylish relative, the Austin A40 or MG Midget sports car, which shared a common floor platform.

BIG trucks/suvs...do owners feel let down?

Avoid at all costs anything carrying the labels "Allegro" (All-agro) and "Maestro," becuase in the unlikely event that they still run, they rust away before your eyes when a few specks of rain appear.

What would you rather have????

Two other possibilities are the Triumph Heralds (in various guises, up to 2 litre straight 6) and the Triumph Spitfires: the latter quite a classic and expensive to buy. With a forward tilting engine bonnet, complete with the front wings, these cars were probably the easiest ever to work upon, and quite reliable.

Is there a cheaper option than a "man with a van" delivery?

As with all older British cars, it is the Lucas electrics which will almost always let the reliability down, but these are very easy to tinker with and replace, so that should not be a major problem.

What does BMW stands for?

As to your friend's recommendations, I would avoid the Fiat 126, due to rust and mechanical unrelability. The Fiat 127 was better, but not a lot! Fiestas are OK, but ever so boring unless in XR2 form. Metro.see above.

Motability And The Deposits?

The Metro is probably your best bet as it shares alot of parts with the Mini including supension and engine/gearbox so you could apply what you've learned onto your daily driver as and when needed.

How many car r there in singapore??

other cars could be anything small, so long as you stick with pre-1990 you should get something fairly basic and easy to work on. If you start going to fuel injection, ABS etc things start to get a whole lot more complicated and expensive. British car parts are usually less expensive than foreign and so are the older second hand cars as they tend to rust more.

triumph spitfires seem like they are undervalued. about the same price as a mini, similar simple mechanics, and something different to drive around in.
