Just because you live in the country doesn't mean you need a 4x4. Certainly not a large one.No I use my 4 by 4 often plenty in the snow have driven through fields in New York and yes I do feel safer and I can see alot more than in a car I own a car also. Its a simple matter of supply and demand, like most things in the west. If you want one buy it,it just costs a bit more to run it!
