You can rent a tow dolly from U-haul. one way.
Of course you will need a ball hitch. U-haul won't rent you the dolly if their computer tells them that your car can not handle the weight of the dolly plus the car being towed. Before I had AAA plus I did a similar tow from jersey to central PA. Towing an 86 MR2 with a 89 Saab 900.

I wouldn't try to tow it with a Subaru. Check your owner's manual for the towing capacity of the Outback. I highly doubt it's going to pull that VW - you'll end up needing both cars towed before long if you try that!

Another thing worth noting - is the VW front wheel drive? If so, you need to get those front wheels off the ground when you tow it or you will wreck the transmission. The same applies if it's rear wheel drive, but in that case you can just remove the driveshaft to avoid tranny damage.
