you don't have to shift gears, hence the word automatic. it automatically shifts gears for you. the transmission has different gear ratios built in to it and when it goes to overdrive, the transmission mechanically locks up the torque converter to give you very little slipping and the best fuel economy. it only goes into overdrive above 35mph.
