Question:
The school bus that I ride has a very loud diesel engine and I want to know what is causing all the sound. In addition to the normal sounds of a diesel engine, it produces a loud fan-like roaring sound that is always there. I really like the sound and I was wondering what component is causing it? Is it even a fan? There is a problem though with the engine. The (fan) belt slips a lot, almost all the time especially when water splashes into the engine compartment, or dust from dirt roads. And when the belt slips, it causes the tone of the sound to decrease, leading me to believe that it might be a belt driven fan. Also, I forgot to mention that the sound-producing object revs (or changes rpm) with the engine? What is causing the sound? Help is appreciated. Thank You.

In a volenteer fire departmen is there a guy that drives the truck only?
let me just say, for someone who rides a school bus, you are very intelligent, as far as your observation of the conditions for the changes of the sound.
