What are the advantages and disadvantages of car makers sharing platforms and components?

The advantages are cost - You're making one basic car, but by changine the body style you can make a whole range of cars using the same platform.

Why are "big cars" still being built with their massive engines, resource wasting and polluting properties?

The downside is that if the car isn't very good, then the whole range isn't very good. Take the Mk4 Golf, Audi A3 for example. A perfectly good car, but described as dull with lifeless steering. That description could be used for any of the cars sharing the same platform.
