The advantages are cost - You're making one basic car, but by changine the body style you can make a whole range of cars using the same platform.Speeding ticket in a commercial truck?
Just think of the VW Golf, Bora, Audi A3, A4, Skoda Octavia, Seat Leon etc. All major manufacturers do it. Renaul share models with Nissan, Ford with Jaguar, GM with Opel, Vauxhall, Saab etc
The downside is that if the car isn't very good, then the whole range isn't very good. Take the Mk4 Golf, Audi A3 for example. A perfectly good car, but described as dull with lifeless steering. That description could be used for any of the cars sharing the same platform.
BUT - when it works, it works accross the range, so you just have to be careful
