My suggestion would be a 1/2 ton V6 pickup, like a Chevy, bachelor version. You don't have put them up on a lift to change the oil or the starter. You can swap the water pump just pulling the fan. You can reach all the spark plugs without having to unbolt all the air conditioning. Body parts bolt on. The extra "hip pocket" brings home anything from the auto parts store. The only drawback is if you got more than 1 significant other. Crew cab trucks are not economical and the gas costs would cancel out the DIY in the long haul.

To be honest with you, there is no car like that nowadays. Sorry to disappoint you... I used to have a car called Trabant and that was excellent, but they stopped making those as it was not a car polluting the environment very much. Try to find a service where they will not charge you thousand pounds for doing nothing. Sometimes it is difficult but it pays in the end...

it would be easiest to maintain a car yourself if you got one that was built in the 80's. fords are always good and quite basic, also look at VW's not only are they fairly easy to maintain but go on for ever and very rarely get anything going wrong in the first place...

As long as age dont matter, carburated are easiest to work on as there is no computer controlled ingnition or fuel etc. Which makes it easy to troubleshoot. As for newer cars I would go with import. Honda toyota nissan.
