Instead of running your gas tank dry, just fill up your tank to full.Then reset your trip odometer to zero. Then drive until the gas tank gets down close to empty. Fill up your gas tank and write down how many miles you have driven from your trip odometer and how much gas was used to drive those miles.
If you drove 225 miles and used 15 gallons of gas, divide the 225 by 15 and come up with the answer = 15 MPG. This method is much more accurate than using only one gallon of gas.
