Which automobile is the most economical (for fuel consumption) on the market in the U.S.?

I'm from the U.K., and would like to know which auto has the best mpg figure, currently for sale in the States. As far as I know, the best on sale over here is the Toyota Aygo diesel, average 68.9 mpg.

i think its the jetta tdi which get 609 mi. to a tank of gas. averaging 63 or better mpg.
