so the police and wardens can spot at a glance who has paid their tax.With computers now, we don't really need them as cameras can scan and spot any untaxed, mot'ed or uninsured cars.
It used to be that passing police or traffic wardens could see
at a glance if the vehicle was taxed,but now with the bar code
incoporated the disc can be read by roadside cameras.

so you wont wake up one morning to find your car gone. then having to pay 300 pounds to retrive it, this happened to me on the day after i bought my car. i could get a disk because i sent the log book to DVLA to state that i am the new owner of the car.Why are the gas prices so hi and why wont the government step in?
To keep a load of people in work producing them and checking you have one.Makes no sense at all they should scrap them and put extra on fuel.
To get a tax disk, you have to insure and MOT the car, and then pay the tax over the counter.
It is therefore an at-a-glance check that the car is insured, MOT-ed and taxed.
Simple as that.
Originally road tax fund was brought in just after ww2 to help repair the damaged roads created by air rade bombings.
Then the government kept charging the public to use the roads, now its just a good earner for the government, some of the revenue collected goes back to the roads the rest is probably lost in pay rises for those people who think they are better than the rest of us.
