First of all look up the values using KBB or another resource to make sure your getting an ok price. Try to arrange the financing yourself if needed.

Look for oil or leaks, look at the exhaust for smoke, clean interior, ac working, tires in good condition, when driving check for vibrations, same when braking. Probably best to call like lemon busters or a mechanic for the once over

I would look at the engine and the body. The engine should not have lost compression-a mechanic can test the car's compression for you. Never mind the oil leaks-they can be fixed easily. Check the body for signs of involvement in a heavy collision-I look at the two corners at the base of the car hood. Those areas should not show any signs of repair. Also check for rust. Check also the tire wear in front. They should be even. And when you do test drive the car, make sure the engine is responsive and shifts smoothly. I would also look at the interior-if the interior is well-kept, chances are the car is well-kept also. I suppose you can tell if the car interior has just been cleaned to make a good impression or if it is really kept clean.
