Gasoline prices are not merely a function of crude oil prices. First there is a "crack spread". This is the margin required to crack crude oil into its constituent usuable products like gasoline (kerosene, diesel, heating oil, jet fuel, etc.). I will admit that crack spreads are unusually high right now. However, there are supply/demand factors that reflect tightness in refining capacity. And of course there is the long-term issue: no new refiners built since 1979. Then there is the cost of distribution. Gasoline isn't produced where it is consumed. Finally, there are taxes. About 1/3 of the cost of gasoline is government taxes. What will the automobile of the future look like?
