When did cars start using computers and electronics? What year cars wouldn't be affected by an EMP?

Question:
I'm looking to purchase a vehicle that could survive an EMP. I think most new cars would be toast. I would think any car that had a carb and mechanical distrib wouldn't be affect by an EMP. Anyone have more details or links?

They tested this out on Mythbusters a while back. In essence, the amount of EMP needed to create a problem with a cars computer was so much that a running car would be the least of your concerns. Besides, if you want to be paranoid, don't forget the gas stations will stop functioning too. Better stock up on lots and lots of fuel, then hope it doesn't go bad. Good luck, my suggestion, get a rifle, handgun and a mountain bike. Learn how to use all three.

American cars started using computer controls around 1980.

However, having an older car wouldn't necessarily prevent a problem with EMP. At the very least, the coil, starter, and alternator would be damaged by a strong EMP pulse...of course, you could build a Faraday cage...

I'd say in the event of an actual EMP event, driving would be the least of your worries. Avoiding fallout would probably be a more serious concern.
