Question:
Does it boil down to education or heritage? Is there something in German beer that stimulates the engineering/practical part of the brain? How come Germany consistently develops more technologically advanced and mechanically superior automobiles than the rest of the world?

Germans develop SOME mechanically advanced parts in cars, but they are NOT by far the most superior in the world. Japanese cars exceed germans in the computer technology components of cars, such as touch screen navis, pre collision warning systems, airbag systems, and most of all, reliability to prevent failure in those aspects of technology and in the mechanical aspects as well.

But to answer your question, innovation boils down to heritage. Germans generally pour money and R&D into designing systems to enhance the driving aspects of cars. You sound like a German? If German Engineers consistently develops most of technological in the world then why wouldn't they received most of " Nobel prizes "? mechanically, German automobiles are far " better " than most of other automobiles but not " superior ", if I have to choose today between a Lexus and a MB in same class, I would pick a Lexus and look at the prices we have to paid for that " technological " superior. For all the required scheduled maintenances and the costs we have to pay when bringing that MB/ BMW in for service, is it worth the costs..most German cars not fully impressed me with their electrical systems, something will goes wrong in a few years, I have an Audi 5000S Turbo once, its a great car and to be honest I was racing side by side with a Camero V8 at a time and even with only 5 cylinders the Camero has a hard time passing it. However, the switch on the Audi power window just quit working so can't close it and the Camero drives on with AC.
Each countries has it own distinctive technological innovation. In US we don't care much about cars and what we drive, just getting from point A to point B and back that's good enough, some people might want to tried a different kind of car makes and that perfectly OK as long as you can send in that payment every month on time, the bank careless about what car you drive to drop off your payment.
