Is it true that the clutch on a stick shift never disengages 100%?

Question:
I was in some sites that say that it is better for the clutch to put the car in neutral and leave the clutch engaged at a red light than it is to put the car in gear and hold the clutch in. One person I have asked said that the clutch plates are always rubbing slightly even if the clutch pedal is pressed in 100%. Is this true, or is some other harm being done to the clutch by holding the pedal in while at at a red light?

Answers:

How many of you know what an auto detail involves and is?

it is true that the clearances are very tight, and that even when disengaged, you can barely get a hair in between the clutch disk, and the flywheel, you do not need to go to neutral at a stoplight. they do not touch enough to cause wear. clutch wear is from the periods between engagement and disengagement, slipping the clutch to get a 3000 pound car moving from a stop. almost no wear is caused by shifting gears once the car is moving. it is all when you are taking off.
