do i need a cdl license to drive a one ton pickup?
Brake horsepower is a way of cheating to show the highest engine output you can measure. The engine is stripped of all accessories, even the water pump (they must use an electric pump to circulate water during the test). Then the engine power is tested at the engine output shaft using a brake dynamometer, hence the term 'brake'. When you add water pump, fan, alternator, power steering pump and drivetrain losses, you can lose quite a bit of power. There are dynamometers that the car sits on and spins with the rear wheels, and the difference can be 50 horsepower or more. The brake horsepower refers to the power at the wheels. Some power is lost during transmission between the engine and the wheels. Because this loss varies from car to car, to compare like with like, power at the wheel (or brake) is used.Do you need to tip mechanics? Especially those at Jiffy Lube?
