Question:
I always thought it was a matter of horsepower but have heard lately that the number of cylinders is more important because of the rpm ratio. Please help me understand this debate a little better. Thanks
Answers:
Why are cars made for people that are 5'10" and shorter?
Contrary to the popular belief, number of cylinders has nothing to do with engine performance. What matters is displacement and yes, most V6 have higher displacement than most i4.How did I do a 360 with my car??
For the same maximum hp engines with higher displacement are easier to drive, because their peak torque comes at relatively low rpm, thus requiring less gear shifting. To realize the hp potential of low displacement engine one has to rev it hard.
well that all depends, some say(like me) go with the v6 due to the fact that a bigger motor labors less meaning it doesnt have work as hard to move the car, less stress on motor the more likely it'll last longer. but if you're using the car mostly in the city, suburbs a inline 4 would be ok unless you like using the throttle. most stock v6's have more torque than a 4 maybe not hp though.it's the torque that gets you moving and the hp that keeps you moving. as far rpm's v6's usually have there power at lower rpms than 4's do
