one shoe in the side of the road ?
It is a matter of personal choice. Gearing down wears your clutch more, where as braking...well uses your brakes :) As an auto tech, brake jobs are easier and less expensive. I brake to a stop - unless the roads are slick and using my brakes is not best for conditions.Gear down!! gradually slow down to save your engine, doing a neutral drop may comletely fry the engine.
Everyone answer this question please?
Gearing down....Because if you do it at the correct RPM's it doesn't put much strain on the engine and it saves the brakes.
why is ther brail on the drive through ATM's?
In the UK it is illegal to put it into neutral and brake to a stop, it is called coasting!!You use the brakes AND the gears to slow down.
Is any one getting tired of us men saying we are better drivers?
Gearing down, because that's how a cars transmission really worksWhy wont my Diesle truck start in MA?
funny enough, my husband and i were just discussing this. when driving standard, the first thing you are taught is to NEVER put it in neutral when braking. you have no control over the car this way. you are just relying on your brakes. if you gear down however, which is the proper way, the car engine holds itself back which is much safer when slowing down---especially in winter weather. hope that answers your question. he always laughs when he sees people putting the car into neutral when slowing down. so who thought what?I would rather replace brake pads than have to go into the transmission.
Does a Saturn ion have a Honda engine in it?,if not what engine does it have.?
Edit:Yikes! I am so outnumbered...I always drove standards and never geared down unless I had to. Didn't burn up any engines either, though...go figure!
what does DOHC and VTEC mean on engines exactly?
Brake, save your transmission rebuild that cost 1500. brake pads only cost 60 bucks and take an hour instead of a week and 1500 like the transmission wouldHow do I take the metro from Bloomington,CA?
gearing down will not hurt the engine or transmission as long as you are not dropping too many gears at once. Think of slowing down as just the opposite as speeding up and it makes sense. and the brakes will love the break...What is the difference between financing the car and leasing the car mean?
Only put it in neutral if you are braking in the snow. Otherwise gear down.is it ok to paint your car chrome i mean is it illegal?
Down shifting properly and braking is the most effective way of stopping the vehicle, but going to neutral and braking is probably the best for the vehicle.Down shifting can put strain on your transmission and wear your clutch. Braking from neutral wears out your brakes. So long as you change your brake shoes when they need changing, the overall wear on the vehicle is minimal.
how come the " car of the year" of the year following the year we live in is already known?
Safe driving, however, requires that you stay in gear to maintain control.
Does the cam belt get changed in the a major service?
doesn't really matter but if u shift to neutral and brake, if something happens suddenly requiring you to speed up u have a shift back in gear, by that time if would be to late so i usually gear down then brake.Buy a Auto transmission vehicle MUAHAHAHA.
K gearing down. For 2 reason:
Safer and more control over the speed.
Your brake pad last longer.
I got a speeding ticket ,while i was on my instruction permit.?
Do you know that if you in gear 4 and u suddenly switch to neutral your vehicle might travel faster then ur gear 4? instead of slowing down it can be speeded up. And if doing a emergency brake at that speed woohooo in neutral gear will cost some blood.
What is that new orange car-color called(as seen on Mission Impossible 3)?
So for those who choose brake instead of gear to save some money. Hope you can consider calculating your life worth how much as well.
Do you prefer rear, front or all wheel drive and why?
Here is the kicker ,YOU ARE BOTH WRONG! Good driving is SMOOTH driving ,no surprises for you or your passengers, anticipate the upcoming stop and maybe drop 1 gear then GENTLY apply the brakes with ever increasing pressure until you have come to a complete stop ,at which time you enguage the clutch and put it in 1st and wait to proceed.NO brake pumping or gear jamming drama is required and no coasting either-this is straight out of TANKER STOPPING 101More Questions & Answers ...
