Why are license plates on cars in comercials the same color as the car? Why not leave them off?

Question:
Almost any car commercial (and some print ads) have the license plate of the car the same color as the car. You can make out the raised numbers and letters on the plate, but its color matched to the vehicle. I can understand not wanting a specific state license plate, but why not just leave it off altogether?

Is this the way of the chelsea tractor?

I have often wondered the same thing. So far, the only thing that I have come up with is this: It must be a marketing thing. My guess is that the advertising companies feel that a person can more easily see themselves in a vehicle that does not look like it belongs on a showroom floor. The paper dealer plates or no plate at all gives a car the look of being un-owned, or sterile. The advertisers likely want the person seeing the ad to picture themselves in the car, or picture the car as their own. It is harder to picture something as yours and as being personal when it is plainly sterile and un-owned. That's just my best guess.

Do auto rental agencies satellite track their cars?

I'm assuming you are talking about the rear plate when it is located on the trunk lid. This is because, if you remove a license plate mounted on the trunk lid, it's not the most attractive thing. So, to avoid this unsightly feature, a color-matched "plate" is placed over it. The hope is actually that you won't notice it, but if you do, that's why the numbers are there. (I'm a marketing major)
