I mean i know most english cars have 8 valve's these days but me and my mate disagree about the purpose of having a 16valve engine. he says having 16 valve engine make's your car faster and i disagree by saying it make's the engine run smoother and not faster. come on car mechanics help me out?

The extra valves do little by themselves, apart from aid breathing to the cylinder, but a higher performance version of the same engine can exploit that better breathing to produce more power, compare two similar engines like the golf 1.8l 8v and the 16v twin cam version, the16v one does produce more power, but it's not just the extra valves which have changed, and as someone has already said th e8v version may be tuned to produce higher torque lower down the rev range than the 16v version, so in day to day driving the benefits may not be too apparent, but in flat out driving the 16v will be faster.why are porcshe cars expensive?

I assume that you are talking about a 4 cyl car? Generally speaking having more valves per cyl makes it easier for the car to "breathe". If you have only one valve for intake and one valve for exhaust, you are more limited in the volume of air that you can move in and out of the cylinder. If you have 2 valves for intake and 2 valves for exhaust, you can move air in and out faster and easier.As for power, the more fuel you can burn and the more efficiently you can do it, the more powerful the engine is. There are many other factors to consider however, all other things being equal, having more valves should make the engine more efficient and therefore more powerful.
Smoothness is not really related to the valve configureation. It's more a matter of how well balanced the engine is.

A 16 valve engine can get more air into the cylinders at high revs and if the electronics are set up for this it will produce more power but only at these higher revs. They are also an advertising gimmick.An 8 valve car will tend to produce more torque at lower revs and be more pleasant to drive in traffic where we all live in Blair's Crumbling Britain.
