Question:
In 1980-82 I was using Gasahol in my car. They sold it at CITGO. It was 15% Corn Alcohol. It worked fine in my car.
I would have thought it easy to mandate everyone use it and cut our consumption 15% right off the top.
Answers:
Am I screwed??
It is still alive and well. At least it is where I live in WA state, and years ago, they added alcohol to the gas in winter as a smog pollution measure in the metro Seattle area counties. Since then, the alcohol content has risen to a current level of 10% and is now in the gas year-round, and I think it is state-wide. I know it says so on the pumps I use when I fill my tank, that the gas has 10% alcohol. I mostly drive a little Geo Metro, the 3 cylinder engine, and believe me when I tell you, in a vehicle with this tiny an engine, I feel the difference, on hills mostly. There is a long steep hill nearby, freeway, which I used to drive every day. Before alcohol in the gas, I did not have to use full throttle to maintain 70 MPH (the limit) up the hill. Now, I floor it, and still, the speed drops to about 55 by the time I hit the top of the hill. I also own a Ford F-250 pickup truck, which has a huge workhorse 390 cubic inch V-8. It never gets more than 15 MPG, fully loaded or not, but then again, it never requires full throttle up the hill while I maintain 70 MPH even with almost a full cord of wood in the back. So, it depends on the engine power that you have available on whether you will feel any difference with or without alcohol which is why you may not feel any difference like with my truck.
Can anyone tell me what is producing that sound in the engine?

Ethanol is simply grain alcohol, and instead of now calling it gasohol, they call it by E10, E85, etc gasoline. The E10 simply means it has 10% ethanol in the gasoline. Some states require it, some don't, and some even have seasonal requirements. Many stations even in states where it isn't required use a mixture of ethanol and gas since it is less expensive.
