I think they were just as dangerous back in the day. A friend had one of those motorcycles, and I rode it once. I hit a bump in the road and my foot slipped off the peg and hit the back wheel. The wheel actualy sucked my foot up under it and pulled me off the bike going about 30. Luckily I wasn't too badly hurt, but decided they were too dangerous. And that was when I was 16 and a total daredevil madman!

My input is only an opinion. I don't think three wheelers are any more dangerous than a gun, or a skateboard or a knife. When any of these are used with common sense they are very safe. Put anyone of these on the ground and walk away, they aren't dangerous until someone missuses them. Heck, just about anything can be dangerous if not used properly, that is why almost everything has a warning label and/or an owners manual. Guns don't kill, people do, that's a train of thought that is true for a lot of things.
