Why is diesel fuel so heavily taxed?

Question:
When the new Audis and Mercedes have proven that diesel engines can be cleaner than gasoline (pollution/mile). Plus, diesel technology can end the foreing oil depency. Shouldnt the government be interested in changing the country's dated perceptions on diesel instead of being a roadblock to it's adoption?

Answers:

Auto Accident?

because all the semi trucks out there the government can make a lot of money off of i converted my Mercedes to run on used vegetable oil i can get around 1,600-1,700 miles on 9 gallons of diesel

Recommend me a cheap used car brand/type to drive?

yea, i agree

What is the fastest car route from London to Woking? On average, how long does it take?

its because the government know that trucks need it to carry goods. so they tax it knowing the everyday person wont see it directly. but by taxing it so much it in turns forces the trucking companies to raise prices to haul the goods you and i use everyday. that in turns causes a raise in prices in order to cover the price in transporting these goods. its bad for everyone in the end. hope this helps clear it up.
