How does this work?

Question:
If you bought a used car (2004) from a dealership, and you drove it home, and before you even got there, the check engine light came on...would the dealership fix whatever if wrong?

Answers:

A pair of unbroken yellow lines indicates that?

If you have a warranty, then yes. If not, you should take it to them and see what they say. If they refuse to fix it for free, check to see if you have a local "lemon law" that'll force them to take the car back.

what are taxi prices based on?

Sometimes the "Check Engine" light can come on for some small thing like a loose vacuum tube or a stuck sensor. If you go to your local auto parts place and ask for an OBD-II reader (it's a little handheld computer), so you can read the code that's causing the Check Engine light. Then you can go to the dealer armed with more info. OBD-II is a standard that all cars after the 90's use, so the reader will be good on other cars too. They range in price up to $100 or so, but the knowledge you get from knowing exactly what caused the light to come on is worth a lot more when keeping you from being cheated. The OBD-II port is usually located on the driver's side under the dashboard.

are you worried about the government road pricing scheme?

The dealer can clear the code without actually fixing the problem, and may do this to see if it's really a problem or not. Sometimes a little valve might get stuck, or you over-rev the engine, and it lights up a code because it's complaining. The problem could go away on its own, so depending on what code it is, they might just clear it and see if it comes back.

Which car company produces the most reliable cars?

Note that if you buy the car from a Private Party, I'm pretty sure you're on your own, regardless. There's a Latin saying: "Caveat Emptor" which means "let the buyer beware", in other words, you need to exercise good judgement and know exactly what you're getting for your hard earned $$$. Next time, have a friend who knows cars go along with you and check it out, if you're not sure about checking everything yourself.
