Why do automobiles use more gasoline for city driving than for highway driving.?

Question:
when they advertise a car they show two numbers for the MPg or whatever it is why is that?

Answers:

why dont gas prices drop since oil is so cheap??

Because of constant acceleration and decelaration. It takes more fuel to get the car moving than it does to keep it moving.

What do you use as transportation?

because city driving is stop and go....like at red lights and stop signs while highway is a constant speed......just like having your a/c on reflects your mileage

When you tow a vehicle, do you put miles on it?

The 2 numbers are for start-stop type city driving and highway cruising. They differ because it takes more fuel to get a car to accelerate to cruising speed (for a number of reasons: overcoming being at rest and gaining momentum, different gear ratios/rpms of the engine as it shifts, efficiencies of engine design, etc.) Once a car is moving, it takes less fuel to keep it at a constant motion.

Does anyone know a good website that shows how a car works ?

Because in the city your in constant stop and go traffic..on the highway you generally maintain an even speed. Also how you drive affects gas mileage. Mpg is shown to demonstrate the average fuel economy in the city and on the highway. Mpg is very important to some people when selecting a car to buy.

massey ferguson tractors?

when your on the highway you are at a constant speed and RPMs stay pretty much the same in city driving you stop and go from red light to red light or stop sign to stop sign. Every time you stop and go you gave to develop your momentum again and again therefore you waste more gas. Like if You are pushing something heavy its easier once you get it moving than if you had to stop every few minutes and start again. You will waste more energy

what is the flash point on gasoline?

because of all the stop and go traffic that occurs in the city...when youre on the highway (and depending on the time) youre not stopped so less gas is being used

parking a stick shift?

stop and go city driving requires more gasoline because it takes more gas to get your car going than it does to keep it going. For instance, when you stop at a red light your car returns to an idle state and there is no forward motion so when the light turn green and you step on the gas it takes more energy (more fuel) to get the car into a forward movement (or backward, if you drive in reverse everywhere you go). When you're on the highway you don't have to stop so you're car runs at the same rpm and the forward motion is continued, thus, your car requires less energy to keep it's momentum and that translates to less fuel being used.
