Wait until it comes on, bright and steady. Write down the mileage. Drive until it sputters and quits. Write down the mileage. Subtract the little number that you took when the light lit up from the bigger number you have now. That's how many miles you can drive after the light comes on.How can you tell they've really changed your car oil when you are not there to see them do it?
If you want a more accurate estimate, do it 5 times, add them all together and divide by 5 to get an average.

Seriously, if the light is going on and off, you may have anywhere from 3 to 7 miles left (not necessarily highway speed). If it's on steady, you may have only about 1 mile left. Check your owner's manual or call your dealer to make sure. I recommend you don't go below 1/8 tank if you're in a busy area where you can quickly get gas but never below 1/4 tank if you can help it.
