What does gasoline do to the enviroment?

Does gasoline cause any damage to the atmossphere? What are some alternative fuels and should we use them instead of gasoline?

There is no conclusive evidence that fossil fuels cause any greenhouse effects other than on computer simulations. But, you would have to be idiot to believe that it doesn't smog-up the air (take a deep breath in LA traffic). Hydrogen appears to be the very best alternative fuel source in so far as quantity (any ocean or lake) and emissions (nothing but pure water). The reality is it costs more to produce hydrogen at present than pumping crude oil from the ground, (for now). As technology advances there may well be a breakthrough that would enable a cheap process of capturing the H molecule. When that happens the air will instantly become cleaner, our cars will run better (no heavy emissions controls to burden them) and OPEC will wither and die on the vine. Reason enough to fund research, eh?
