Why are traffic lights in the order of red on top and green on bottom?...My 6 year old wants the real reason.?

Question:
The red light is on the top and the green is on the bottom, he wants to know why. The best answer I could give is that the top light is the easiest to see from far awa and over other cars and it is more important for people to know when to stop than when to go. If anyone has the real reason, please respond--he thinks I'm crazy so we've researched the topic and can't find it.

Answers:

which would be better for a high boost turbo engine, an aluminum block or a cast iron block?

Some people are color blind; unable to distinguish between red and green.

Does this info help any?

Do you think a vehicle where the driver stands upright while driving is practical ?

Green at the bottom is easier for the drivers waiting at the light to see. Simple as that. In some countries they have the lights horizontal, it really doesn't make a difference either way.
