What does the 'A' in A406 / A40 etc and the 'B' in B36 etc mean in highway terms?

They are designated Exit letters. I've seen them all the way up to C. They help you get in the right lane for your exit. One way, to look at it is to map your travel plans. with these letters so you know if you need to go North/South-East/West. the map will show the proper exit for you to take.
