Question:
Why do most new cars have this? I've noticed Ford and Dodge have their own type of Dexcool now...my mom's van has it and it seems to warm up faster and stay warm longer after you turn the van off...is that what it's designed for? so your car can warm up faster in the winter?

how do you fit m3 mirrors to a corsa c?
I personally believe that is because it is very sensitive to contamination. There is no way I'd change an older car to Dexcool, there's no way you could get the cooling system clean enough.
I have 7 year old Dexcool in a new car I bought, with no problems. In new cars I think it's great, if you're careful not to contaminate it. If it needs water, I add nothing but pure distilled water.
Dex was originally designed and marketed (by who else, GM) to extend time between coolant changes and engine flushes. The coolant does not cool or prevent freezing any better or worse than the conventional 'green' coolants. Here's the rub: go to any local radiator repair shop and ask them what they think of Dexcool. The universal answer is "it's putting my kids through Harvard" or some equivalent. The Dex will last much longer before chemical breakdown than the green but when it ages the side effects are devastating. The stuff goos, clogs and gums the cooling systems with abandon. I have seen the results dozens of times and I am perplexed as to why GM didn't pull the plug on this crap years ago. Word is the chemical compounds are much improved now, however, I drained, flushed and refilled every car I own with conventional green coolant and have had no adverse side effects at all. (keep in mind doing this will void any OEM warranty so don't do it on a new car).
Why don't drivers of Land Rovers go any more than 40 mph?
Dexcool was designed by GM with a certin chemical compound to protect the metals of the engine. When GM first came out with it they were experamenting with metals and found that the ones they use, with the dexcool is the best combination. Dexcool is designed to coat the interior componants and protect the metals without haveing one metal eat away at the other. It is also safe on the seals that they use. If you run the Green coolant in a Dexcool system the engine will not last as long because there will be more interior wear, and Ford and Chrysler have they're own versions of it, they are pretty much always called Ford long life or Chrysler Long Life. These coolants have very similar componants to each other but are very different in chemical compounds then dexcool, the Ford and Chrysler coolants are designed for the metal combinations in they're engines. I work in a garage and i get asked this a lot, i have taken a cource on coolants and this is what i have been told, and after 2 days you really get to know a lot of stuff about coolants. its really hard for me to explain but thats a shortened form. almost everyone is creating thier own coolants now, but you can not mix them, or change a system for them, if its ment for GM, use it in the approved GM, if its for Ford, use it in the approved ford, if its for Honda, use it in the approved Honda.More Questions & Answers ...
