Absolutely, it is standard practice to use the braking affect of the engine to slow your vehicle. When driving a stick shift you should "change down" when slowing your car to get the most benefit, your brakes will last longer and you will have more control of your vehicle. Your clutch life should not be reduced that significantly so long as you do not ride the clutch.

Does any one know basics about the auto parts forging industry?

i own a repair shop and it is a little hard on the clutch disc, its alright to just let of the gas and let it slow down, but to instantly drop it down a gear does put a lot of unnecessary wear on the clutch, and i think id rather put brake shoes on ,as to change a clutch any day,its easier and cheaper,so i wouldn't be using the clutch to much for this, good luck,i hope this help,s.
