Has anyone any caravanning experience? I'd like to buy one, but I'm only little so would I be able to detach

Question:
the car from the caravan by myself. Is it heavy? Do I have to lift the caravan or not? Does a caravan need road tax, insurance and an MOT, etc, as a car would? I'm such a novice.

Modern caravans are much easier to unhitch then older ones. You can buy remote controlled motorised caravan movers but they are quite expensive. The easiest way I found to unhitch was to drive the van to exactly where you want to leave it then, using the jockey wheel lift the van off the car, drive the car away and lower the jockey wheel to level the van. Sounds a bit complicated but in practice it isn't. You should insure a van but it doesn't need tax or MOT, although a regular service is recommended.

By the way, caravanners are friendly people and if you get stuck on a site there are usually people about to help you out. Good luck with your search, but a word of warning, don't get drawn in by a salesman wanting to earn commission!

Why don't you have a look at trailer tents? They're cheaper, easier to tow and they're great fun - we had one when I was a child and had the best holidays - the base of the trailer is the floor of your tent, so you're up off the ground, like a caravan, and in our one, the rear of the trailer swung open to house a sink and a gas cooker - it's less basic than camping, and less onerous than caravanning.

How were covered wagons made?

We hired a caravan when I was a kid, for a family summer holiday. About 3 days into the holiday, a lorry came passed us too fast, the caravan jack-knifed, hit the car and flipped over. Thankfully no one was hurt and we managed to salvage most of our stuff from the wreckage.

For that and many other reasons I really really wouldn't recommend getting one!
