those 2 gear selections can be used for extra traction in ice and snow. If ur stopped on an icy road, and u try to start moving but slip, try shifting from D into L or 2 and u'll get more traction from the start
L is for low, meaning the 1st gear in your automatic transmission.

"L" means lazy and "2" means too fast! No, seriously, "L" means low gear - equalivalent to 1st gear- and "2" means 2nd gear. You can use these two gears to help you get through heavy mud or snow. When in "D" your transmission shifts through low and 2nd for you. Low and 2nd allow you to shift gears for yourself if you need to, or want to.
