Car in the movie Grease?

I was watching the movie Grease the other day and my mother said that her old high school boyfriend had a car like the black one that had flames coming out the back. How did they do that? Wasn't it dangerous?

there called flame throwers.in the old days they use to weld spark plugs in the exhaust pipes that had voltage supplied to them and when you stomped on the gas you would flip a switch powering the pugs which would then ignite the excess fuel in the exhaust creating the flames
