Navigation systems (for cars) generally use data from GPS satellites to figure out your exact lattitude/longitude location, then use that in conjunction with a large array of digital road maps found in the system itself to show where you are on the roads. It's priced so high for cars because you're basically also getting a highly detailed digital database of every road map in the country, as well as the system's ability to accept directions and tell you hot to get there.
