Why is it some people spend money for a nice stereo system, tires, and wheels for their vehicle, when the vehicle isn't even worth a fraction what any of the above even costs?

They are not looking at resale value. People who put this kind of moey into a car are usually attempting to make te car "cool". They will sink money into a look and sound but usually won't (or won't have the money to) go the extra mile and sink money into making wat might be a real dog of a car into a masterpiece they can be REALLY proud of.Essentially, you are asking why some people are stupid... there is no ultimate answer just like there is no answer why some people are tall, and others - short. Part of this is due to genetics.

I drive a 1989 Ranger. I've been putting money into the interior to completly fix it up. I had a bench seat in there that was givign me back problems, I replaced them with salvaged bucket seats from a 1994 Windstar (not an easy task at getting them to fit in, but they are in. New carpet, a center console, painted door pannles and dashboard (two toned) and the a Pioneer deck (cheaper one , and the 4 speakers are Infinity) Nothing overly special about the stero. The exterior is pretty much stock with the exception of window vents/visors, and two "fog" lights I have mounted in behind my grille. I have done a 3 inch drop only for stability, and have upgraded the springs/leaves, and sway bars. My next major move for the truck is to remove the weak V6 and drop in either a 302 or 351W (i know thoes will fit, i'm not to sure about the 460 though).I'm doing a low budget build. Its more so a bordem project than anything. Its been fun for me. I do this when I'm bored. I currently have $2500 tied into this with purchase price of the vheicle ($1000) and tires (and rims to replace the steel rims, aluminum rims from pick'n'pull for $580 together). The interior looks like I spent about $600+ at least, but it has cost me less then $150, and the rest has been put into maintance. However, I would never do anything to it that is too overly pointless, like a rim and low pro's package. or a super paint job. After I get my engine/transmission/rear end in, I plan on actually racing this thing. I'm going to be putting more money into a good engine and keeping it good then I am for looks. I don't care about looks, I have soem mild rust on it right now. Kind of the sleeper I want to do. I love it when my weak V6 can smoke out a rice burner thats sitting beside me at the lights.
