Am I doing damage to my truck?

I have a Silverado with a 350 motor 5 speed trans. and was wondering if I am hurting it by coming down from 5th gear to 4th when I pass people even though I'm running say 55 or 60. It really helps to get out and around them when I do it and so far I have no ill effects from it.

What color should i paint my BMW?

5th gear or Overdrive is for cruising at hwy speeds and not intended for passing unless you are on a 4 lane hwy...dropping down to 4th is very similar to the way automatic transmissions kick down to passing gear when you step on the pedal and it does not harm the car/truck...NOW if you abuse this scenario then you know the consequences...if you just use it then there will be no problem

Best bet for a rental car?

What you're doing is the same as stepping down on the gas in an automatic. It drops out of OD and gives you more acceleration. As long as you don't over rev the engine, you won't do any damage. If you have a tach, just keep it out the red.

What car do you drive?

Depending on your rear end gear, you could even drop to third and really accelerate (seriously). Just keep the revs below the redline, don't go past 5500 revs on that motor if it is stock.
