mine isnt in the steering colomn. when i drive my mothers truck im always trying to stick it where mine is forgetting that we have different vehicles. i know you guys have done that atleast once. and also does it make the cars easier to steal having it in the steering column?

Well Gm was the first to put it in the column and a lot of car people copyed itIf it is in the dash, you can yank out the wire and start it. If it is in the column it still can be stolen but it is a lot harder.
Todays dashes are now covered with steel and not open like the older cars.
To get at any of the wwires under the dash is a job and hard to get at in any case.
The steering column mounted switches integrate the locking mechanism for the steering wheel. The dash mounted switches usually don't have that.

Removing the ignition switch from the steering column creates more room for airbags, light switches, tilt levers, hazard switches, windshield wiper switches, horn buttons, cruise controls, radio controls, high/low beam switches and triggers for your machine guns.
The steering wheel area is a convenient spot for accessory controls because your hands are right there anyway. Since the key switch only needs to be used first and last, it makes sense to relocate it.

the ign.sw. that is in the steering column is better for you as it locks the steering wheel in the off position making it very dificult to steal. other makes of cars that dont have that feature are easier to steal usually. thanks for the 2 points !As you can see, it was placed there to allow for locking of the steering wheel. This was a big improvement for many older models that could be hotwired by jumping some wires behind the dash.
To answer your last question, there's a whole generation of older GM cars with keys on the steering column that are extremely easy to steal. Even inexperienced theives found they could pop open part of the steering column with a screwdriver and activate the linkage as if they had a key.
