I believe the word "mag" is in reference to magnesium the metal. A common misconception is that it refers to the heavy spokes a wheel might have. Magnesium is a silver colored metal. and it burns very hot that is why they are not used very commonly for obvious reasons. I think some of the mustangs in the late 70's had them.
